Hiking to Huckleberry Point, one of the best views in the Catskills
Huckleberry Point is one of the most rewarding hikes in the Catskills, offering a stunning panoramic view of the Hudson Valley and nearby mountains. The hike is moderately challenging, making it accessible to most hikers while still providing a bit of adventure and a great view.
The overlook at Huckleberry Point is breathtaking, with sweeping views of the Hudson Valley, Platte Clove, and the surrounding peaks of the Catskills. On a clear day, you can see for miles, and in autumn, the foliage display is spectacular.
Hike Description: The trail begins on Steenburg Road, just off of Platte Clove Road near the Platte Clove Preserve and Plattekill Falls. The first section follows the Blue Trail (part of the Long Path), gradually ascending through a mix of hardwood forests.
About a mile in, the trail splits, with the right fork leading to the Huckleberry Point Trail (Yellow Blazes). This section through mixed forests, with occasional rocky patches and wet areas. About a 1/3 of the way to Huckleberry Point, you will cross a small stream—this may be dry in the summer but can be flowing in spring or after heavy rains. The trail then climbs to a highpoint, and then descends down to Huckleberry Point. As you near the viewpoint, the forest opens up, leading to the dramatic clifftop at Huckleberry Point.
